Full Review of the Park Hyatt Melbourne with Kids

We traveled to Australia over Thanksgiving break and split our time across three incredible destinations. Our trip included two nights in Sydney, four nights in the Whitsundays, and our final two nights in Melbourne. While in Melbourne, we decided to do a split stay between the Park Hyatt Melbourne and the Grand Hyatt Melbourne.

This was intentional, and I am glad we experienced both. Each Hyatt property offered a very different feel, location, and overall experience, which made it easier to see which one is a better fit depending on your travel style.

In this review, I will share our experience at the Park Hyatt Melbourne, why we chose to split our stay, and how it compares to the Grand Hyatt Melbourne for a family trip. If you are deciding between Hyatt hotels in Melbourne or planning a points stay, this comparison should help you decide which one makes the most sense for your trip.

How we booked the Park Hyatt Melbourne

We booked the Park Hyatt Melbourne through the Fine Hotels and Resorts program offered by American Express. If you are not familiar with FHR, it allows you to book luxury hotels and receive valuable perks like daily breakfast, a property credit, and potential room upgrades.

One of the biggest reasons we chose this route was the benefit from The Platinum Card® from American Express, which now offers up to $300 in statement credits twice a year when booking through Fine Hotels and Resorts. This was a recent change from the previous $200 annual credit, so we made it a priority to use our credits before they expired.

Both my husband and I have the American Express Platinum Card, and since we usually need two rooms when traveling as a family, this worked out perfectly. The cash rate at the Park Hyatt Melbourne was right around $300 per night, which meant we paid nothing out of pocket for either room.

On top of that, we received a $100 property credit per room along with daily breakfast for two people in each room. Because you typically cannot stack Hyatt Globalist benefits when booking through Fine Hotels and Resorts, we used our credits toward parking and applied the remaining amount to dinner at the hotel.

Another important factor for us was that Fine Hotels and Resorts bookings still earn qualifying nights with Hyatt. Since we are always working to maintain our Globalist status, earning an elite night credit on this stay made booking through FHR an easy decision.

Booking on the Park Hyatt on Points

If you prefer to book with points instead, the Park Hyatt Melbourne is a Category 5 in the World of Hyatt program. Award nights range from 17,000 to 23,000 Hyatt points per night, depending on whether your stay falls on off-peak, standard, or peak dates. This makes it a solid option for using Hyatt points in Melbourne, especially you’re traveling during peak season.

The Welcome at PH Melbourne

We had a lovely welcome to the hotel. The service was very friendly, and we were upgraded to a King View Deluxe Room connecting to a Twin Room. Our room was ready early, which we really appreciated, especially after a busy morning. We checked in around 1 pm, and everything was smooth.

The lobby is beautiful and feels very grand, making for a great first impression. Finding the entrance was a little tricky at first since the hotel sits on a one-way street. After a few loops around the block, we figured it out and were able to pull right up to the hotel without any issues.

The Room at the Park Hyatt Melbourne

As I mentioned earlier, we were upgraded to a King View Deluxe Room, and it truly felt more like a suite than a standard hotel room. The space was over 600 square feet and included a separate sitting area with a fireplace, which made the room feel extra comfortable. The bathroom was large and beautiful, with a separate soaking tub and plenty of space to spread out. There was no balcony, but that did not feel like a downside given how spacious the room was overall. We really enjoyed the view of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the city.

One thing that really stood out to me is that the Park Hyatt Melbourne allows three people to sleep in a standard room, which is a huge win for families of five who typically need two rooms. It can be surprisingly hard to find standard rooms overseas that sleep more than two people.

Fireplace in the King Deluxe room at the Park Hyatt Melbourne

Our room was connected to a two-twin room, and when we arrived, the rollaway bed was already set up for the kids. This might sound like a small detail, but it made a big difference. So many times we have requested a rollaway in advance and still ended up waiting for it to be delivered, or waiting for the couch to be converted with extra bedding. Walking into a room that was already fully prepared was such a thoughtful touch.

We also had a few welcome treats waiting in the room, which the kids loved. Between the generous layout, the elegant bathroom, and the cozy fireplace, the room felt both comfortable and special. It was the kind of space that made us want to slow down and actually enjoy being in the hotel.

The Breakfast at the PH

Fine Hotels and Resorts covers breakfast for two guests per room on each reservation, so we were not sure if we would be charged for our third child. Thankfully, we were not, which was a nice surprise.

Breakfast was served buffet style with a wide selection of juices and specialty coffees, which made it easy for everyone to find something they liked. The buffet had a great variety of options, including fresh fruit, meats and cheeses, a granola station, and made-to-order items like omelets. It was a relaxed and enjoyable breakfast for our family.

The breakfast setting was beautiful. Some tables are located on lower levels along the staircase, while others sit higher up, all surrounded by tall ceilings and an impressive spiraling staircase. It felt elegant and calm, making it a lovely place to start the day. I enjoyed sitting there so much that I ordered a second cup of coffee, first a flat white and then a cappuccino.

There is also a hot station where you can order pancakes, waffles, and omelets, which was a big hit with the kids. The bacon, however, was more like ham, which is common at many international hotels. My kids always judge a breakfast by the bacon, and unfortunately, this one did not quite meet their standards. That said, everything else more than made up for it, especially the pancakes and waffles, and we still really enjoyed breakfast overall.

The Fine Hotels and Resorts Benefits

Booking through Fine Hotels and Resorts came with several valuable benefits for each room. We received a $100 USD property credit per room, a room upgrade in one of our rooms, no resort fees, and welcome gifts upon arrival. We were also allowed to check in early, which was helpful after a long travel day. Late checkout was offered until 4 pm, although we did not need it since our flight was leaving around 1 pm.

We used each of our $100 property credits toward dinner at one of the hotel restaurants. The food was good and convenient, though it was not particularly memorable. Still, using the credit for a meal made it feel like real savings rather than an extra perk that went unused.

Overall, we really love the Fine Hotels and Resorts program, but there are a few things to keep in mind. If you book one room and stack back-to-back reservations using different credits, you may only receive one $100 property credit for the entire stay rather than one per night. For example, if you prepay a night in December for a February stay and then use your new January credit to add another night, reports suggest you may still only receive one property credit total. This is something to be aware of when planning longer stays.

That said, this benefit works especially well for us because we often book one-night stays and usually need two rooms. Since both my husband and I have the card, we are able to use the benefit easily and consistently. We plan our Fine Hotels stays at the beginning of the year so the credits do not go to waste, and we get full value from them.

With such a high annual fee, every benefit matters. When used intentionally, Fine Hotels and Resorts has been one of the easiest ways for us to offset that cost while enjoying better hotel experiences along the way.

The Service at the Park Hyatt Melbourne

The service during our stay was excellent, and we felt genuinely well taken care of. The breakfast service, check-in experience, and having our room prepared exactly as requested all contributed to a great stay.

Hotel Status

We do hold Hyatt Globalist status, but when you book through Fine Hotels and Resorts, you typically do not receive both sets of benefits. Occasionally, we have had Globalist perks apply as well, such as parking being waived, but that has not been consistent. That said, the Fine Hotels and Resorts benefits closely mirror Globalist benefits, so it still ends up being a great value overall.

Family Rooms

As mentioned earlier, a standard room sleeps 3 with a rollaway, which makes this a great place for a family of five or six.

The Parking

The parking was valet only and cost $80 AUD a night.

Amenities

The hotel offers an indoor pool, a gym, and outdoor tennis courts. Unfortunately, we did not have time to use these amenities during our stay, but the pool area looked beautiful.

Local Activities

Unfortunately, it rained for most of our visit, so we were not able to check off many of the activities on our list. That said, Melbourne and the surrounding area offer plenty to do if you have the time and better weather.

We were able to check off the first six items on this list, and they were all well worth it. Do not miss the pizza at 39 Pizzeria and the pastries at Publique Bakery, as they were some of the best I have had recently.

  • Hosier Lane for some of Melbourne’s most iconic street art
  • Queen Victoria Market
  • 39 Pizzeria CBD, one of our favorite meals in the city
  • Publique Bakery
  • Piccolina Gelateria and Pidapipo for excellent gelato
  • Brighton Bathing Houses
  • Phillip Island to see the penguins, reservations required
  • St Kilda Pier for a more local penguin experience closer to the city
  • Maru Koala Animal Park to get up close with kangaroos and koalas
  • Torquay Beach for an easy coastal day trip
  • Bells Beach, known for its scenery and surf culture

If you have more time, the Great Ocean Road is a must-do experience. The drive takes a full day, so we were going to pass on it, but it is one of the most scenic road trips in Australia and well worth fitting into your itinerary if possible.

The Location

The Park Hyatt Melbourne is not as centrally located as the Grand Hyatt Melbourne. It is set slightly back from the main square and the busiest areas of the city, which gives it a quieter feel. While some travelers may prefer that calmer location, for our short stay, we found ourselves preferring the location of the Grand Hyatt because it made it easier to access everything we wanted to see.

That said, the Park Hyatt Melbourne is still conveniently located just minutes from Parliament Station and within walking distance of restaurants and shopping. The Grand Hyatt Melbourne, however, sits right in the heart of the CBD near Bourke Street Mall and Flinders Street, making it the better option if you want to be in the middle of the action.

Park Hyatt vs Grand Hyatt Melbourne

Overall, we preferred the Park Hyatt Melbourne over the Grand Hyatt Melbourne because it felt more luxurious. We enjoyed the rooms and beds more, and breakfast was a better experience for us as well.

That said, the Grand Hyatt Melbourne has a better central location, and the club lounge is a nice perk. The food in the lounge was very good, and the views and service were excellent. We also had thoughtful welcome gifts waiting for us at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne, which was a nice touch.

If your goal is to save points or cash, I would not hesitate to book the Grand Hyatt Melbourne. It is a great option and offers strong value, especially if location and club access are priorities for your stay.

Here are the Pros and Cons:

Would We Return?

We would absolutely return to the Park Hyatt Melbourne if we found ourselves in the area again. That said, we do not see ourselves returning anytime soon since there are still so many other countries on our travel list.

We loved our time in Australia and look forward to coming back in the future to explore more of the country, especially the west coast, on a return visit.
