Transfer bonuses are one of the biggest reasons why flexible points are the key to your points-earning strategies. When you earn points through major bank programs (like Chase, Capital One, Citi, Bilt, or Amex), you’re not locked into one airline or hotel. You can transfer those points to different travel partners, and that’s where the magic happens.
Instead of being stuck with one loyalty program, you can move your points to whichever airline or hotel gives you the best value. That flexibility is what allows you to book business class flights, luxury hotels, and all-inclusive resorts for a fraction of the cash price.
And when a bank transfer bonus pops up? Your points can instantly become even more powerful, especially for large families!
A transfer bonus is a limited-time promotion where a bank gives you extra points when you transfer to a specific airline or hotel partner.
For example:
If there’s a 25% transfer bonus and you transfer 100,000 points, you’ll receive 125,000 miles in the airline or hotel program. That means you need fewer bank points to book the same flight or hotel stay. It’s one of the fastest ways to stretch your points further when used strategically.
Here’s the simple math:
Take the number of points you need for the award
Divide by (1 + bonus percentage)
Example:
A flight costs 50,000 airline miles
There’s a 25% Chase transfer bonus
50,000 ÷ 1.25 = 40,000 Chase points needed (round up to the nearest thousand)
Instead of transferring 50,000 Chase points, you’d only transfer 40,000.
Family Example: Let’s say you need 5 flights, and each flight costs 75,000 miles.
75,000 miles × 5 seats = 375,000 Amex points needed.
There’s a 40% Amex transfer bonus
To figure out how many Amex points you need, divide by 1.40:
375,000 ÷ 1.40 = 267,857 Amex points.
Round up to the nearest thousand: 268,000 Amex points.
Instead of transferring 375,000 Amex points, you’d only need about 268,000.
Rarely, unless you’re very experienced with points and miles, you’re completely confident you’ll find the exact flight you want when you need it, or you have more points than you know what to do with. Once you transfer flexible bank points to an airline or hotel, you cannot transfer them back.
That means you should only transfer when:
Transfer bonuses are exciting, but flexibility is even more valuable. Don’t give it up unless you’re confident you’ll use those points.
This page will be updated every time a new transfer bonus is announced. Transfer bonuses change frequently, and some only last a few weeks. If you’re building a points balance for an upcoming trip, checking this page regularly can help you maximize every point.
