We loved celebrating my birthday at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort Golf Club & Spa in beautiful Carlsbad, California. Carlsbad is one of our favorite destinations in Southern California, known for its amazing restaurants, clean beaches, and relaxed coastal vibe. Since there aren’t many true luxury resorts in Carlsbad, I was especially excited to experience this Hyatt property. Last year, we stayed at the Hyatt Regency Resort Huntington Beach and the Seabird Resort, and we were excited to see how the Aviara compared. We booked a stunning Pool Suite using 30,000 Hyatt points per night, plus a suite upgrade award earned from our Hyatt Globalist status to guarantee the room.

When we arrived at the Park Hyatt Aviara in Carlsbad, we were greeted by the friendly valet staff. Parking here is valet-only. After our 5–6 hour drive from Phoenix, we pulled in around 3 p.m. and headed inside to check in. We walked into an amazing view of the property.
Unfortunately, our room wasn’t ready yet. While the front desk team was polite, the arrival experience didn’t feel as polished as I would expect from a Park Hyatt. We spent some time wandering the beautifully landscaped property until our room was finally ready around 4:30 p.m.

We booked the Pool Suite at the Park Hyatt Aviara in Carlsbad using a Hyatt Suite Upgrade Award. If you’re unfamiliar, Hyatt awards these upgrades when you reach certain qualifying night tiers with the World of Hyatt program. The suite was spacious at 855 square feet, plenty of room for our family of five. However, since the resort doesn’t offer rollaway beds, my youngest ended up sleeping on the couch cushions.
Our first impression wasn’t perfect. The bathroom had an odd smell, which made it feel like it hadn’t been cleaned thoroughly. The layout itself was great, with two bathrooms, one full and one half bath, a separate living area with a large pull-out sofa, and a private bedroom with a king bed. We also had a double patio with gorgeous views of the pools, waterslides, and the resort grounds.

Although I mentioned we were celebrating my birthday, there were no welcome gifts waiting. Not a big deal, but a little disappointing. Overall, the suite was comfortable, though not my favorite style. Think fancy modern, similar to the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach.

Overall, the service at the Park Hyatt Aviara was somewhat disappointing at first, but things turned around by the end of our stay. After checking out, I received a survey email asking me to rate the property. I shared that we enjoyed the resort overall, but mentioned a few issues—like the bathroom odor and being woken up at night by loud noise. (It was Easter weekend, and there were two weddings on the property, so things were a bit lively.)
In my review, I kept the tone positive while noting these minor inconveniences. The manager personally replied with a sincere apology and generously offered 36,000 Hyatt points. Honestly, I didn’t think our stay warranted that many points back. It was a kind gesture that left me with a much better impression of the resort.
We loved our Pool Suite view at the Park Hyatt Aviara. From our balcony, we could see the sparkling pools, exciting waterslides, and the beautiful resort grounds. It was the perfect spot to soak in the exciting atmosphere of Carlsbad’s luxury getaway.

We only had breakfast at the Park Hyatt Aviara at Ponto Lago during our stay, since it was included with our Hyatt Globalist status. The patio seating was perfect, overlooking the lush resort grounds in beautiful Carlsbad. The breakfast itself was incredible and easily one of my favorite Globalist breakfasts to date. Everything from the buffet was fresh and flavorful, from pastries to hot dishes that tasted like they were made to order. It’s saying a lot, but even compared to the extensive international Hyatt breakfasts we’ve experienced, this one stood out. Maybe it was the relaxing outdoor setting that made it so special. Hyatt Globalist benefits include 2 adults and 2 children. The buffet is priced at $40 per adult and $20 per child, and while they initially said they’d charge $20 for one child, our entire breakfast was waived at checkout.

Valet parking costs $68 per night, but it’s complimentary for Hyatt Globalists—a great added perk if you have status. It would be worth trying to get a hold of a Guest of Honor award for this resort for the free breakfast and waived parking fee.
If you book with Hyatt points, then the resort fee of $60 was waived. This is what the resort fee includes per the Park Hyatt website:

The Park Hyatt Aviara in Carlsbad has such a fun pool area! There’s a big zero-entry pool that’s perfect for all ages, plus another pool with two awesome waterslides that my kids couldn’t get enough of. If you’re looking for a quieter vibe, there’s an adults-only pool with its own hot tub, and the main pool area has a hot tub too. I loved the little sandy play area for younger kids. Around the pools, you’ll find comfy lounge chairs (free), cabanas you can rent, and even free water and sunscreen, which is such a nice touch. The pool bar kept us happy with drinks and snacks, and we ended each day around one of the cozy fire pits.

There’s so much to do at the Park Hyatt Aviara that you’ll never get bored, and that’s not even counting all the fun beach activities nearby. The resort has a free shuttle that takes you to the tennis and pickleball courts, plus you can play badminton and bocce ball. The area is gorgeous, but you do need to make reservations for the courts. They have all the equipment you’ll need, and while we were told we’d have to buy our own pickleball to take home as a souvenir, the court staff let us borrow theirs for free, which was a nice surprise.

We really appreciated that the resort fee included towels, beach chairs, and umbrellas. It’s such a relief when you’re flying in and can’t bring those bulky items, but it’s also great when you’re on a road trip and don’t have to pack or haul them along.

Beyond that, there’s a fitness center (I’ll be honest, I didn’t use it), a Topgolf Swing Suite, and even fun paid activities like cooking classes if that’s your thing.
Since we were there over Easter, we were excited for their Easter Egg Hunt… but it didn’t quite live up to expectations. We showed up a little late and ended up at the back of the line. Instead of being on the lawn, it was inside a conference room, probably because there were two weddings happening outside. Unfortunately, a “stand-in-line” Easter egg hunt doesn’t work very well, because by the time we walked in, there weren’t any eggs left! My kids were disappointed, but they were good sports about it.
Having Hyatt Globalist status really paid off at this property. While we didn’t get a room upgrade, we did enjoy free breakfast and free valet parking, both of which saved a ton of money here. If you don’t have Globalist status, it’s worth trying to get a Guest of Honor award applied to your reservation. Sometimes you can find people offering them for free in Hyatt Facebook groups, or you might see them for sale on eBay (though buying there is always at your own risk).

Carlsbad is one of our favorite locations near San Diego, and the Park Hyatt Aviara is perfectly situated along the stunning Carlsbad coast, offering a peaceful retreat surrounded by natural beauty. The resort is spread out over 250 acres overlooking the serene Batiquitos Lagoon. This resort combines luxury with nature. It’s just a short drive from popular spots like LEGOLAND® California, Carlsbad State Beach, and San Elijo Beach, making it an ideal base for exploring the best of Southern California’s coastline. Whether you want to relax by the lagoon or enjoy nearby attractions, the location can’t be beat.
There’s some really great food nearby, and our favorite spot is The Taco Stand. Whatever you do, don’t miss out on their delicious tacos—they’re seriously some of the best we’ve ever had. There’s another location in La Jolla as well, but we like the one near the resort as there was more space inside.

The Park Hyatt Aviara is a Category 7 Hyatt property, with award nights costing between 25,000 and 35,000 points per night, depending on the season. Their standard rooms are spacious, over 500 square feet, offering plenty of room for families. If you want extra space, you can also book a suite directly for a slightly higher points cost. As I mentioned earlier, we used 30,000 points per night plus a suite upgrade award to stay in a gorgeous Pool Suite. Standard rooms at the Park Hyatt Aviara usually cost over $700 per night, while the Pool Suite can go for more than $1,000 a night—making this an excellent value when booking with points.

This is a fantastic family-friendly resort. You can even book a standard room with two king beds, which is perfect for larger families, depending on your kids’ ages. We would have chosen that option, but it wasn’t available during our stay. Another option is a standard room with a king bed and a pull-out sofa, which also works well for a family of five. Or just booking into a suite with points. Keep in mind, this resort did not offer rollaway beds at the time of our stay.
Yes, I would return to this resort for a fun weekend getaway, especially to enjoy the delicious breakfast again. However, I think I have a slight preference for the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort. You really can’t beat being able to walk to the beach.
